<code> "Kelsey," he intoned, using his deep, melodious voice, the voice of the storyteller she remembered so well from her youth. The voice she had grown to fear and hate. "This is your destiny. I know you left this world, and believed you'd never be back. You went to California, a place for sinners, and tried to change the course of God's plan for you. But God is powerful, and He never stopped believing in you, even when you doubted Him. He wanted you here.

"I know I was uncertain what pathway God would choose for you. At first I believed you were meant to stand by my side, by your mother. Joshua showed me the error of my ways. He showed me the true prophecy and God's true purpose for you. Isn't it wonderful to know you have such a holy purpose? You belong here. This is your world. David is your soul mate, your celestial partner for time and all eternity. Don't you know how special that makes you? Don't you know how precious you are, that God would choose you to bear His sons?"

Kelsey listened to him with a sinking heart. He was earnest, trying to convince her so urgently this was where she belonged, that all of this madness was divinely inspired. She knew he truly believed it. He believed he was doing the right thing.

She didn't know at what point this madness had settled into his brain; whether he'd begun molesting her and convinced himself of the sanctity of his actions, or whether he'd later begun this descent into insanity because he couldn't live with himself.

All of these other people here -- the men with guns and the women she hadn't seen but knew about -- they were also believers. Believing David Stone was a prophet, the reincarnation of Joseph Smith -- who in Kelsey's mind was himself a poor sort of a prophet, anyway -- and that he would deliver them from the arms of evil and into the glory of God.

Her father continued to speak, not seeing the contempt in the eyes looking back at him.

"Kelsey, when you were a little girl, you were so set in your ways, so sad. You rebelled against our every move to show you the right way. I wanted to show you the right way, to keep you from experiencing the heartbreak of the real world. That is all I ever wanted."

Finally, she found her voice. She'd tired of hearing his spiel. It was time to speak up.

"You're wrong. It was wrong. You should never have touched me, and you should never have taken my daughter. I want her back. Tell me where she is."

A look of puzzlement crossed her father's face, and Kelsey knew he'd convinced himself once he had her back in his reach he would be able to persuade her of the truth of his beliefs and his actions. He'd never conceived she would continue to stand against him and his authority as her father. He'd always been like that.
